Krata Community

We develop and run projects related to social and environmental sustainability focusing on creative engagement with communities of interest, from geographically connected groups to schools to business leaders.

We initiate projects ourselves, or work with other individuals and organisations who wish to run a sustainability related project. If you have a project or an idea that you think would resonate with our activities, get in touch

Our emphasis is on using methods of engagement with energise and enthuse the participants. We use workshops, multimedia, play, humour and fiction.

Krata in schools
We love working with young people. They are open, enthusiastic, engaging, funny and full of ideas about how to be enterrpising, change society and help the environment. We have run several projects, from working with students in Chorlton High to run a consultation on barriers to healthy eating , to asking the students to explore the question, 'What is a social enterprise?'. We are currently putting together a project for students that encourages them to think about sustainability and enterprise - how students could be enterprising in addressing social and environmental problems. If you'd like to know more, get in touch.

Krata in business
Krata's directors have worked in both the social and the private sector, so our learning and understanding of the dynamics of these very different worlds assists enormously when engaging the business community on sustainability related issues. Most recently, we facilitated the formation of the 100 Months Club, organising an event that brought together CEOs and senior business leaders in the Manchester region to discuss how to accelerate action on climate change. We have also established our own social enterprise, Oneless , which wholesales an alternative to plastic bags to retailers in the UK and abroad. We therefore understand the challenges in setting up and running a small business providing goods to commercial organisations.

Krata in the Chorlton community
We emphasise the need to focus energies locally, so we work in our local community of Chorlton in Manchester on challenges ranging from making Chorlton a Fairtrade area, to reducing the use of plastic bags, to finding out the barriers to healthy eating. We are currently working with people in the Merseybank area of Chorlton to set up a community cafe.

Krata and women
We also run a women's network, thinkingwomen, to provide an opportunity for women to get together and discuss social, environmental, economic and emotional issues, hearing from other women and learning from their experiences. We are keen to work with other women's networks to develop a community of women willing to act as mentors for each other and younger women.

Krata in academia
We are currently developing relationships with the academic community to draw more theory into our practice and to share our learning from our projects. We are currently working with the New Media for a Digital Economy network to explore how the digital economy might address sustainability challenges over the coming years. We are also interested in Futures work, most recently developing a collaboration on Post-Oil Futures to work with communities to imagine their lives after oil has run out.
